The Chicago Blackhawks got a little sloppy on a third-period power play Wednesday night. Antti Raanta was there to bail them out.
The 24-year-old Finnish goalie was forced to make saves on two separate Philadelphia Flyers’ short-handed breakaways - during the same Blackhawks power play.
Raanta first denied Brayden Schenn with the glove, after the Flyers’ forward forced a turnover at center ice, broke in alone and deked to the backhand.
Just a few seconds after that, Raanta was called upon again, this time throwing out the right pad to stop Michael Raffl on another short-handed breakaway. Now, both saves occurred when Chicago had a four-goal cushion, so debate all you want about whether they were game-savers. But a confidence booster nonetheless when a goalie makes those kinds of stops.
Raanta made 28 saves total, as the Blackhawks defeated the Flyers 7-2. He now has a record of 5-0-1 in seven games with Chicago.
