It sounds like Steven Stamkos is on track to play in the 2014 Winter Olympics despite breaking his tibia on Nov. 11, as TSN’s Darren Dreger reports that the Tampa Bay Lightning sniper is targeting a Feb. 6 game against the Toronto Maple Leafs as his return date.

Stamkos, 23, insists that he isn’t going to rush his recovery. If he manages to make it back to help Canada seek a gold medal without pushing it, then he might steal the “Wolverine” healing nickname from Max Pacioretty.

A lot can change in the next month or so, which explains why Pierre LeBrun adds that the Canadian brain trust will wait until as close to the Jan. 7 deadline to choose its roster.

It’s safe to say that they will be following Stamkos’ progress closely, then.
