Report: Red Wings close to signing Ericsson to extension

The Detroit Red Wings might be a little bummed about Danny DeKeyser’s injury, but it’s not all bad news for the D corps. The franchise is “on the verge” of signing Jonathan Ericsson to a contract extension, according to TSN’s Bob McKenzie.

The extension would last between four and five years and include a cap hit around $4 million per season (or maybe a little higher), McKenzie reports.

This would keep the 29-year-old from hitting unrestricted free agency. The big Swede ranks second among Red Wings defensemen with an average ice time of 22:13 per night, including 3:13 on the penalty kill.

He also has four points in 11 games, but the Red Wings are probably more enamored with his defensive work.

Obviously this doesn’t mean that he’ll sign for sure, yet if it’s just a matter of time, it’s a nice deal for both sides.
