Leafs recall d-man Liles for road trip

The Maple Leafs have recalled defenseman John-Michael Liles from the AHL, according to multiple reports.

The move comes ahead of Toronto’s three-game trip to Western Canada, on which the team apparently wants to bring seven defensemen.

Liles has one goal and four assists in eight games with the Marlies. At this point, it’s not clear if he’ll get into a game on the trip, which starts Tuesday in Edmonton and continues Wednesday in Calgary before ending Saturday in Vancouver.

The Leafs are reportedly willing to trade the 32-year-old offensive blue-liner. And according to TSN’s Darren Dreger, they’re willing to “retain a significant portion of Liles’s salary for the remainder of his contract.”

Signed through 2015-16, Liles’ cap hit is $3.875 million, of which only $925,000 is saved by having him play in the minors. Under the CBA, teams can retain up to 50 percent of a player’s salary and cap hit in a trade.
