Gustavsson gets third straight start versus the Avs

Jonas Gustavsson

Tonight in Colorado against the undefeated Avalanche, red-hot Jonas Gustavsson will make his third straight start in goal for the Red Wings, as reported by MLive.com’s Ansar Khan.

Gustavsson, regularly Detroit’s backup, has been forced into action while starter Jimmy Howard recovers from a hand injury. Suffice to say, the 28-year-old Swede has taken the opportunity and made the most of it.

On Tuesday, Gustavsson stopped 36 of 37 Blue Jackets shots in a 2-1 Detroit victory. That first-star performance came one night after a 30-save, 3-2 win over Boston that left Bruins forward Milan Lucic raving.

Wings teammate Todd Bertuzzi has also been impressed.

“He’s stepped up and is playing very well,” Bertuzzi said, per the Macomb Daily. “He’s playing like a goalie who’s 6-foot-4, coming out and challenging. He made a huge save there in the end. He’s playing very competitive. He’s out of the paint and being very aggressive. He’s been doing a heck of a job. We’ve played two pretty good teams here and he’s stood on his head.”

FYI, here’s that “huge save” Gustavsson made at the end of the Jackets game.
