Red Wings’ Weiss leaves tonight’s game as a precaution

Detroit Red Wings forward Stephen Weiss left tonight’s pre-season game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, although it does not appear for anything serious.

Weiss exited the game in the second period with a sore groin, according to TSN’s SportsCentre.

According to Ansar Khan of, it was just as a precaution, and that Weiss was “100 per cent sure” he’ll be ready for Detroit’s season and home opener on Oct. 2 against the Buffalo Sabres.

Weiss signed a five-year deal worth $24.5 million with the Red Wings this summer as an unrestricted free agent.

With that type of contract, he’s under considerable pressure to perform.

“Told him if he wasn’t ultra-competitive he couldn’t come here,” Wings head coach Mike Babcock said earlier this month.

“If he didn’t bring it every day he couldn’t come here, because he was going to hate it if he didn’t, dislike the coach and dislike playing here.”

Yeah, luck isn’t going Nail Yakupov’s way right now

Life’s been tough for Nail Yakupov since Connor McDavid went down with an injury, but he was wrong if he thought things couldn’t get worse.

The Edmonton Oilers continue to see a disturbing pattern of draft lottery luck and then poor luck for many of those high-end picks, as Yakupov was shaken up during a truly unusual set of circumstances.

This post will be updated when more is known about Yakupov’s status. Regardless, that’s pretty ridiculous.

Video: Mike Fisher ends Nashville’s nasty goal drought

No, the Nashville Predators did not forget how to score goals … or at least they were lifted from that amnesia on Wednesday.

Mike Fisher lifted the curse 13:52 into the first period of tonight’s game against the Buffalo Sabres. You can watch that rare beast in the video above.

They had been shut out for three straight games and pretty close to four in pure game time.

On this subject, PHT’s Jason Brough asked Predators GM David Poile if he was considering moving a defenseman to improve in another area earlier today.

Update: The Predators already chased Linus Ullmark from Buffalo’s net as they stormed out to an early 3-0 lead.

Struggling Sabre Tyler Ennis out with upper-body injury

Tyler Ennis can probably relate with the Buffalo Sabres’ opponent on Wednesday, as he’s struggling almost as much as the Nashville Predators.

Perhaps some of that has to do with health?

Whether that’s the case or not, Ennis is out for the Sabres tonight, as the team announced that he’s dealing with an upper-body injury.

The Buffalo News discussed Ennis’ struggles in this article.

“I’d say he’s pressing too much. You can’t make those plays in every situation and in every point you touch the puck,” Dan Bylsma said to the Buffalo News. “ … He’s just got to simplify his game. He is a special player who can make those plays, but he can’t be trying to do it every time he touches the puck.”

He’ll need to wait a while to start getting things together, anyway.
