Report: NHL eyes documentary series for outdoor games, Olympics

Once it became clear that the NHL is going forward with a plan to host six outdoor games, one of the natural questions was: “what will it all mean for the HBO 24/7 series?” The league plans on shooting an eight-part documentary series that will run from the outdoor games all the way through to the 2014 Winter Olympics, the Sports Business Journal/Daily’s Chris Botta reports.

The series would likely air on NBCSN along with the CBC and Sportsnet, according to Botta.

The aim is for the documentaries to be styled after those 24/7 episodes, which is certainly an ambitious plan. It remains to be seen if the NHL would share the same kind of unfiltered looks that made HBO’s series so beloved by hockey fans.

Naturally, keep in mind that this is just a report, and there’s conceivably plenty of things that could railroad such a large project.

Still, if the league manages to pull this off, it could be a huge boon for fans and the sport as a whole.
