Injured Giroux to skip Team Canada Olympic camp

Claude Giroux’s freak golf injury is a costly one.

On Friday, it was announced that the Flyers forward would be skipping Team Canada’s Olympic orientation camp -- which begins Sunday in Calgary -- to focus on rehabbing his finger, which he hurt after shattering his golf club during a round last Thursday.

“Giroux had successful surgery this afternoon on his right index finger performed by Dr. Katherine Boyd at the Ottawa Civic Hospital in Ottawa, Canada,” Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said in a statement. “Giroux was golfing today when his golf club shattered and splintered into his index finger.

“Although there were no broken bones, there was some damage to his extensor tendons in his finger. He is expected to have a full recovery in 5-6 weeks.”

Giroux was one of 25 forwards invited to the camp and, according to ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun, Hockey Canada isn’t planning on inviting another player in his absence.
