Jonathan Huberdeau skates for first time since hip surgery

Florida Panthers rookie Jonathan Huberdeau’s 2013 Calder Trophy victory seemed to signal a bright future, especially since he did so despite a wonky hip that required offseason surgery in mid-May. The 20-year-old center took to Twitter to share the news that he skated for the first time since that procedure on Monday.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel reports that Huberdeau is “on track” to participate in Panthers’ training camp.

Huberdeau managed 31 points in 48 games during the 2013 season, tying him with Edmonton Oilers winger Nail Yakupov for the scoring lead among rookie skaters.

The Panthers opted against making splashy free agent moves this summer, so their hopes for improvement are likely pinned to young players like Huberdeau. A healthier season certainly wouldn’t hurt that cause, then.
