Patrice Bergeron will be a member of the Bruins for a very long time.

Boston has announced that Bergeron has agreed to an eight-year extension worth $52 million. He still has a year left on his previous contract, which means that he’s signed through the 2021-22 campaign.

Bergeron, 27, is one of the league’s leading two-way centers. He won the Selke Trophy, which honors the league’s top defensive forward, in 2012 and was a finalist to repeat in 2013.

He’s also gifted offensively, scoring 10 goals and 32 points in 42 games last season.

Of course, what he’s been most associated with lately is his toughness. Bergeron played through a multitude of injuries during the Stanley Cup Final, including a broken rib, torn rib cartilage and a separated shoulder.

After the Bruins were eliminated in Game 6, he was hospitalized for observation. It was later revealed that he also had a small puncture in his lung.

“You obviously don’t want to put your health in danger… No regrets on my part, I’ll tell you that,” Bergeron said.
