Bought out by Leafs, Komisarek goes to Carolina

Mike Komisarek

Mike Komisarek will attempt to his resurrect his NHL career in Carolina; the 31-year-old has signed a one-year, $700,000 deal with the Hurricanes, days after being bought out by Toronto.

Komisarek played just four games for the Leafs in 2013, ending up in the AHL with the Marlies.

A tough, stay-at-home defenseman, Komisarek joined the Leafs in 2009 after an All-Star season with the Canadiens. At the time, he was heralded by new (now former) Toronto general manager Brian Burke for “his hard-nosed approach.”

Burke was intent on making the Leafs tougher to play against, but Komisarek never really found his footing with and struggled to stay healthy.

In Carolina, he should enjoy a much lower profile with far fewer expectations.
