Bolts sign Jonathan Drouin to entry-level contract

The Tampa Bay Lightning continued a big Friday by signing first-round pick Jonathan Drouin to a three-year, entry-level contract.

It carries a $3.225 million cap hit through the 2015-16 season. Here’s how the money breaks down for each season, according to Cap Geek:

Salary if he’s in the AHL: $70K
NHL salary: $925K
Possible performance bonuses: up to $2.3 million
Signing bonus: $92,500

Simple enough: the Lightning gave Drouin basically the best deal a rookie can ask for, rather than trying to haggle over small differences. As the third overall pick in 2013, there wasn’t a ton of wiggle room to try to save on a contract. Many would argue that the possibly NHL-ready 18-year-old is worth that price tag already.

This has been a pivotal time for the Lightning’s forward group, as the team signed Drouin and Valtteri Filppula today and parted ways with Vincent Lecavalier earlier this week.
