The Detroit Red Wings can feel pretty good about their future tonight. Their AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins, have won Calder Cup for the first time in the franchise’s history.
In Game 6 of the final round, 22-year-old forward Tomas Tatar netted two goals and goaltender Petr Mrazek, 21, turned aside 24 of 26 shots to lead the Griffins to a 5-2 victory against the Syracuse Crunch.
“We knew it was going to be a real hard series,” Griffins coach Jeff Blashill said, according to NHL.com. “We knew Syracuse had the heart of a champion.”
The Crunch, the AHL club of the Tampa Bay Lightning, were led by 22-year-old forward Ondrej Palat, who had a league-best 26 points in 18 playoff games. Tatar finished with an AHL-leading 16 goals in 24 postseason contests.
For his efforts, Tatar was named the AHL’s playoff MVP.
This dominant win is a heck of a way for the Kings to begin an imposing seven-game road trip, which continues against the New York Islanders on Thursday. The Bruins probably want to burn the tape on this one themselves, as they’re about to head on a six-game road trip.
Per @EliasSports: @LAKings had 9 different skaters score in a game for 5th time in franchise history. Last: Jan. 21, 1987 vs. PIT (10-5 W).
Some hockey players resist the urge to wear a visor, at least if they’re given that choice.
Perhaps a few will say “Hey, Nathan Beaulieu will just punch it off anyway.”
Maybe not, but Beaulieu provided a rather unique moment in his fight with Cedric Paquette during the Montreal Canadiens – Tampa Bay Lightning game. You can watch that bout in the video above, and see a cut on the Lightning pest’s face from that blow.
That said, it the very specific present, they’ll be watching Tuesday’s game from the press box.
After an unsatisfactory practice amid flailing playoff hopes, Flames head coach Bob Hartley made a big statement tonight, taking Monahan, Gaudreau and Lance Bouma out of the lineup as healthy scratches against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
#TORvsCGY Roster Update: Sean Monahan, Johnny Gaudreau, and Lance Bouma will be healthy scratches for tonight’s game vs. the #Leafs.
