Sharks expect Hertl to compete for roster spot next season

Hertl

We mentioned this Friday, but the San Jose Sharks officially announced today that the team has signed its 2012 first-round draft pick (17th overall), Czech center Tomas Hertl, to an entry-level contract.

Hertl, 19, had a team-high 18 goals and 30 points for HC Slavia Praha this season.

“Tomas has the tools and skill set to be an impactful player for our organization,” said Sharks general manager Doug Wilson in a release. “He has been a dominant player at every level he has played at in his career thus far, including playing against players older and more physically mature than him. We are tremendously excited to have Tomas come to training camp this fall and compete for a spot on our roster.”

Of course, the Sharks already boast tremendous depth at the center position, led by Joe Thornton, Logan Couture, and Joe Pavelski.

It’s worth noting, however, that Thornton only has a year left on his contract, and at 33 years old it will be interesting to see how he fits into San Jose’s future, if at all.
