The Carolina Hurricanes couldn’t come to terms with Swiss-born forward Gregory Hofmann on Sunday, which means he’ll re-enter the upcoming draft, according to the Raleigh News & Observer.

He was a fourth-round pick (103rd overall) in the 2011 draft. Canes GM Jim Rutherford explains what happened.

“We wanted to sign Gregory to a contract, and felt that he could have a future with the Hurricanes on the NHL level,” Rutherford said in a statement. “It is disappointing that we were unable to reach an agreement with his agent to keep him in our organization.”

He scored 27 points in 49 games with Swiss league club HC Davos this season.
