Blackhawks rally around Crawford after long-range second period goal

Craw

It could’ve been the goal that sunk the Chicago Blackhawks.

Joakim Andersson beat Blackhawks’ goalie Corey Crawford with a long-range wrist shot just past the midway point of the second period, giving the Detroit Red Wings a 2-1 lead, which they entered the third period with.

Brent Seabrook’s stick was in the area, and Andersson’s shot - more of a knuckle-puck - may very well have been deflected on its way to the net. (Click to view the video).

Had the Red Wings held on, they would’ve eliminated the Blackhawks, the Presidents’ Trophy winners, in the sixth game of the Western Conference semifinal.

The Blackhawks erupted for three goals and then held on for the 4-3 victory, erasing what was a 3-1 series deficit and forcing a Game 7.

“He’s been behind us every step of the way. Games we probably shouldn’t have won we did because of him,” said Blackhawks’ captain Jonathan Toews, according to a tweet from CSN Chicago’s Tracey Myers.

Crawford was the busier of the two goalies Monday.

He made 35 saves, while at the other end, Jimmy Howard allowed four goals on 28 shots.

The Andersson goal began to look like it might be the difference. It wasn’t, and Crawford would just as quickly forget about it.

“It happened. Just got past it. Moved on. After that goal, just settled down and moved on from there,” Crawford told Myers.
