‘He’s our backbone': Rangers’ Lundqvist perfect in Game 7 victory over Capitals

The Washington Capitals, with rejuvenated star Alex Ovechkin, could not solve Henrik Lundqvist when it came time to trying to close out the New York Rangers.

Lundqvist, the Rangers 31-year-old goaltender, recorded back-to-back shutouts over the Capitals in the final two games of this best-of-seven Eastern Conference quarter-final, with the second one coming in Game 7 on Monday.

The Rangers pulverized the Capitals in Washington by a score of 5-0 to win the series and will now face the Boston Bruins in one of two Eastern Conference semifinals.

The last Washington player to score in this series: Mike Ribeiro, at 9:24 of overtime in Game 5, to give the Capitals a 3-2 series lead.

Since then, however, Lundqvist has been perfect.

He has now gone 120 minutes without allowing a goal. He stopped 35 shots on Monday.

“He was really good, but the team was good in front of him,” Rangers’ head coach John Tortorella told NHL.com.

“Henrik was fantastic throughout the series. He’s our backbone.”
