After surgery, Wings’ DeKeyser (thumb) out ‘til July

Already ruled out for the remainder of the playoffs, Detroit defenseman Danny DeKeyser will now likely be out of action until the Red Wings’ development camp in July.

On Wednesday, Detroit GM Ken Holland said DeKeyser underwent thumb surgery earlier this week, a procedure that involved the insertion of a plate and screws into his hand.

Holland also said the rookie blueliner “will have to have them in permanently.”

DeKeyser, 23, signed with the Wings this season after a standout career at Western Michigan University.

He joined the team late in the regular season and appeared in 11 games -- notching one assist while playing over 18 minutes a game -- then played in two postseason contests before breaking his thumb.

Holland said the injury will likely sideline DeKeyser until July, but told the Detroit Free Press there’s a small chance he could return if the Wings advance to the Stanley Cup finals.

“Let’s get there first,” Holland added.
