Video: JVR scores first Leafs playoff goal since 2004

James van Riemsdyk

James van Riemsdyk scored the first Toronto Maple Leafs playoff goal in nine years by finishing a power-play chance versus the Boston Bruins in Game 1 on Wednesday:

OK, technically it’s just under nine years. Mats Sundin scored a game-tying goal on May 4, 2004 to send Game 6 of the Leafs’ series against the Philadelphia Flyers into overtime. That set the stage for the famous turn of events where Sami Kapanen struggled to get to the Flyers’ bench just moments before Jeremy Roenick ended the series.

Yup, it’s been a while.

In case you’re wondering, Wade Redden scored a goal and then was involved in the second tally to put Boston up 2-1 later on in the first. The Sporting News’ Jesse Spector points out that Redden scored against the Maple Leafs in 2004, too.
