Brodeur expects Lamoriello to make Devils ‘as good or better’

Martin Brodeur

Martin Brodeur didn’t stay in New Jersey “not to be able to compete,” so he fully expects Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello to “go out and make this team as good or better than what we have now.”

Of course, per the Star-Ledger, Brodeur does admit he’s slightly concerned that key players like Patrik Elias, Dainius Zubrus, David Clarkson and Marek Zidlicky are unrestricted free agents that may not be back.

“There is always a risk,” Brodeur, 40, said. “We don’t have the checkbook to figure that out. If any of us had the checkbook, you’d want to make sure you get in the playoffs. This organization will make decisions on the way they want to run the team.”

Outside of management, it’s anyone’s guess how much New Jersey owner Jeff Vanderbeek is willing to commit in player salaries for next season.

In January, Vanderbeek gained full control of the Devils after refinancing the club’s debt and buying out his partners.

Brodeur has one year remaining on his contract.
