Leafs’ Gunnarsson out with lower-body injury

Some believed that the Toronto Maple Leafs made defenseman Carl Gunnarsson a healthy scratch on Monday, but it turns out that he’s sitting out the team’s game against the New Jersey Devils for injury-related reasons.

Gunnarsson is day-to-day with a lower-body injury, according to team PR rep Pat Park.

Head coach Randy Carlyle has kept the majority of his blueliners on their toes this season. Rogers Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston points out that the former NHL defenseman has made every member of the team’s defense corps a healthy scratch at least once this season (aside from top guy Dion Phaneuf).

Gunnarsson’s numbers in a condensed season haven’t been that far off from the stats he’s managed in longer campaigns. After collecting 20 and 19 points during the previous two seasons, he has 14 points (one goal, 13 assists) in 33 contests while averaging 21:35 minutes per game in 2013.
