Flyers steal a late one from the Capitals

If the Washington Capitals miss the playoffs by a point, they might look back at Sunday’s 5-4 overtime loss with serious regret.

The Capitals seemed to lock up a 4-2 win by scoring two goals within a minute early in the third period, but things unraveled after that.

Claude Giroux and Kimmo Timonen triggered a three-goal Flyers flurry - including Timonen’s tying tally with 10 seconds left - to give Philly the come-from-behind win. (Giroux had a goal and two assists while Timonen had a tally and three helpers.)

Both teams are now nearly in the same place in the East standings:

10. Carolina (16-15-2 for 34 points in 33 games played)
11. Washington (16-17-2 for 34 points in 35 GP)
12. Philadelphia (15-17-3 for 33 points in 35 GP)

Considering the fact that the New York Rangers’ grasp on the eighth spot in the East is tenuous at best (16-15-3 for 35 points in 34 GP), this could be a pivotal moment for both teams. Then again, others might say that maybe the Flyers simply pulled the Capitals down with them ...
