The Buffalo Sabres hosted the 2008 NHL Winter Classic, and now it appears their American Hockey League affiliate, the Rochester Americans want to do the same.

According to the Buffalo News, the Americans have scheduled a press conference for Thursday morning. It is expected the club will announce that it is playing an outdoor game at Rochester’s Frontier Field in December.

Outdoor games have been well-received and are a massive draw in the NHL, and are growing in popularity in its top developmental minor league as well.

In January, the AHL held its fifth ever Outdoor Classic.

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins defeated the Hershey Bears 2-1 in overtime before a crowd of 17,311 - average attendance at AHL games is 5,651 fans - at Hersheypark Stadium.
