It hasn’t been a banner season for Flames prospect Sven Baertschi. He came into this season with a lot of hype and a lot of hope he could emerge as the next big thing in Calgary.

Instead, he’s dealt with injury and poor play resulting in him having just one assist in ten games this season and now he’s headed back to the AHL. Baertschi was a healthy scratch for the team’s 4-0 loss against Anaheim last night but his demotion comes at a time when center Mikael Backlund is ready to return.

The Flames activated Backlund off of injured reserve and will have him in the lineup against Los Angeles tonight. Backlund’s been an important player for Calgary in the limited time he’s played this season scoring three goals with one assist in eight games. The Flames can use all the help they can get offensively as they’re 19th in goals scored this year.
