Rangers claim Hamrlik off waivers

The New York Rangers added some defensive depth via the waiver wire on Wednesday, claiming Roman Hamrlik from the Washington Capitals.

Hamrlik, 38, had been a healthy scratch on numerous occasions in Washington this season, appearing in just four games. He’s in the final season of a two-year, $7 million deal signed with the Caps in 2011.

The first overall pick in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft, Hamrlik now heads to a Rangers team that’s seen its blueline bruised and battered over recent weeks.

Ryan McDonagh and Dan Girardi have both missed time with various ailments and, in a scary incident last night against Philadelphia, Marc Staal took a puck to the eye and was forced to leave the contest.

According to ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun, the decision to claim Hamrlik isn’t an indication of the severity of Staal’s injury. He reports the Rangers had internally discussed picking up the veteran blueliner before Staal got hurt.
