Not giving up: Coyotes lease opponents start referendum drive

Jobing.com Arena

Opponents of the recently approved lease between the Phoenix Coyotes and the City of Glendale are seeking a referendum on the issue.

The effort is considered a longshot to succeed, as organizers will reportedly have to collect almost 7,000 signatures by Dec. 27 to put it to a vote.

Earlier this week, incoming Glendale mayor Jerry Weiers said he was disappointed the 20-year, $320 million agreement was approved by city council, but he’ll make the best of the situation when he takes office next year.

Prospective Coyotes owner Greg Jamison is hoping to close on the purchase within the next 30-60 days. However, should he be successful, it’s possible a lawsuit could be filed by opponents claiming the deal violates state laws that prohibit governments from subsidizing businesses.
