More Quebec labor board fun scheduled for December

Bill Daly

On Dec. 6 and 7, the NHLPA and NHL will once again square off in front of Quebec’s provincial labor board.

For those that haven’t been following this scintillating storyline, the players are arguing that the NHL’s lockout is illegal under the province’s labor code. (The league obviously disagrees.)

Earlier this month, the NHLPA lost a similar appeal in Alberta. And even if it wins in Quebec, union spokesperson Alexandra Dagg admits it likely won’t end the work stoppage.

“Will it help settle this lockout? Probably not,” Dagg said, as per the Montreal Gazette. “But we think there are certain principles that are worth fighting for and continuing to try to put forward.”

The union’s foray into the exciting world of provincial labor boards has, to put it gently, frustrated the NHL. In September, deputy commissioner Bill Daly called the appeals “a joke.” The league has also referred to them as “needless distractions.”
