San Jose Sharks forward Tommy Wingels (one of the best names in the NHL) is off to the Finnish second division to play for KooKoo (one of the best names in anything, period.)
KooKoo plays in the Mestis, the league below Finland’s top-flight SM-liiga. The full name of the club is actually Kouvolan Edustuskiekko, which was probably shortened to KooKoo after setting someone’s keyboard on fire.
Wingels, 24, has spent the last two seasons shuttling between San Jose and its AHL affiliate in Worcester. He had nine points in 33 games for the Sharks last year and appeared in all five playoff games before signing a two-year extension in June.
“I’m very grateful to sign this contract extension,” Wingels told CSN Bay Area at the time. “And I’m excited to be a member of the first-class organization that the Sharks are.”
