John Davidson has left his post as president of hockey operations for the Blues, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The move isn’t unexpected. When Tom Stillman bought the Blues in May, there was talk that Davidson, along with his hefty salary, could end up on the chopping block as part of cost-cutting measures.

The Post-Dispatch reports Davidson accepted a buyout offer from the club. (Three years and $6 million remained on his contract.)

It’s not known what he’ll do next. The 59-year-old said in May that, if he left the Blues, he could take another front-office job (he’s been linked to the Calgary Flames and Columbus Blue Jackets.)

He also said he could end up back in broadcasting or just retire.

When Davidson joined the Blues in the summer of 2006, the club had just posted the worst record in the NHL and stood 27th in league attendance, averaging just 14,213 per game.

Last year, the Blues finished third overall and average attendance was 18,809.
