Sounds like the NHL’s oldest player from last season wants another kick at the can.
According to a source of TSN’s Darren Dreger, 42-year-old Dwayne Roloson turned down an offer as a goaltender consultant/coach with Toronto and will continue focusing on his playing career.
Roloson, who spent last season with the Tampa Bay Lightning, is currently an unrestricted free agent. He’ll turn 43 on Oct. 12.
Here’s more, from Dreger:Won’t make Insider Trading tonight, but, Leafs source confirms Dwayne Roloson was approached about a goalie coach job within organization.
— Darren Dreger (@DarrenDreger) September 25, 2012Rolly likely would have handled AHL, while Rick St Croix deals with NHL. Roloson declined. Still wants to play.
— Darren Dreger (@DarrenDreger) September 25, 2012Two weeks ago, St. Croix took over the Leafs’ goalie coach duties from Francois Allaire, who left in a cloud of controversy after it was revealed he’d been given an ultimatum by head coach Randy Carlyle:
The [ultimatum] list included: working a maximum 17 days a month, including six with the Marlies, rather than being around the team every day; apologizing to the coaches on staff he had offended; and a commitment to teaching a more aggressive goaltending style.
It’s believed Allaire bickered with Toronto’s coaching staff throughout most of last season, especially during the team’s disastrous 7-18-4 finish (during which goaltending proved to be a major issue.)
So...maybe Roloson’s reason for rejecting the gig wasn’t all about his desire to keep playing.
