Bettman sees latest NHL proposal as “a significant, meaningful step”

Bettman

The NHL presented the players’ union with a new proposal on Tuesday and while commissioner Gary Bettman would not disclose the details of the latest deal, he did call it “a significant, meaningful step.”

Some of the economic details about the NHL’s proposal have reportedly surfaced. Among other things, the current proposal would reportedly lower the 2012-13 salary cap to $58 million.

“We need to get on the same page on the economics,” Bettman said in an NHL.com report, “and we’re hoping that by virtue of the proposal we made today that there will be some traction and that there will be a framework for the negotiation.”

The two sides will meet again today and there are meetings scheduled through Friday. Bettman is hoping the union will respond today.
