The Edmonton Oilers haven’t reaped huge rewards from drafting first overall three years in a row just yet, but they’ll need to start paying extra for the privilege soon.

Taylor Hall is about to enter the third and final year of his entry-level deal, so the Oilers are free to sign him to a contract extension.

TSN’s Ryan Rishaug reports that the two sides have “resumed preliminary talks” with Hall on a new deal.

The aggressive winger improved on his rookie totals with 27 goals and 53 points last season, but he was limited to 61 games after playing 65 in 2010-11.

Hall hopes to bounce back from shoulder surgery next season, whether he already signed a contract extension or not.
