The Detroit Red Wings have added another big name to their star-studded alumni team.
Paul Coffey, second all-time among NHL defensemen in points, will wear the winged wheel on Dec. 31 when Detroit takes on the Toronto Maple Leafs in the annual Winter Classic alumni game, to be played at Comerica Park.
Coffey played four seasons in Detroit and will be joined by two teammates from the famous 1995-96 team that won a record-setting 62 games -- Mathieu Dandenault and Martin Lapointe.
Coffey led all Wings defensemen in scoring that year (74 points in 76 games) but was traded to Hartford prior to winning a Cup with Detroit.
Dandenault and Lapointe would feature prominently in Detroit’s three championships from 1997-2002.
