CBA talks to resume on Tuesday

NHL Financial Documents

Danny Cleary recently speculated that the CBA talks would heat up in August. We’ll find out soon enough.

As Chris Johnston reported, NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr will kick off the week by meeting with European players. However, according to Renaud P Lavoie, he’ll be back in New York on Tuesday for the first of four days worth of CBA talks.

We’re waiting to see what the NHLPA’s counter-proposal might be. In the mean time, the union has been requesting financial documentation from the NHL.

The Los Angeles Kings’ Kevin Westgarth tweeted a picture of 76,000 pages worth of NHL financial documents boxed up, which helps provide an idea of just how much information they have to go through.

It’s worth adding that Mathieu Schneider described those documents, which you can see the picture of in the upper right corner, as “the first drop.”

The current CBA expires on Sept. 15, so obviously time is running out. However, Fehr has repeatedly left the door open for the players continuing to work under the old CBA even if a new one isn’t reached before the start of the season.

It’s not clear if the NHL owners would be equally warm to the idea of beginning the season without a new CBA.
