What they’re saying about Nashville matching Philly’s offer sheet for Weber

Shea Weber

The Nashville Predators have stepped up in a major way, matching the 14-year, $110 million offer sheet defenseman Shea Weber signed with the Philadelphia Flyers.

By doing so, the Preds have made Weber the highest-paid defenseman in NHL history and the only current player signed through the 2025-26 season.

Yeah, it’s a biggie.

Here’s what folks are saying on the Twitter machine about today’s landmark deal:

Philadelphia Flyers: “WEBER UPDATE: ‘In tendering an offer sheet to Shea Weber, we were trying to add a top defenseman entering the prime of his career. With Nashville matching our offer, we wish Shea and the Predators all the best.’ -Paul Holmgren”

John Manasso, Fox Sports South: “As I said last Friday on WUZ104.5 [Nashville radio], it was an existential moment for Preds. They looked into the abyss, didnt like what was on other side.”

Sam Carchidi, Philly.com: “Give the Flyers an “A” for trying and for that not-too-sneaky front-loaded contract. Still, they are now 0 for 3 in trying to get top FAs.”

Frank Seravalli, Philadelphia Daily News: “The tough thing for Flyers is that a Plan B after Weber is really like a Plan E, there’s that much of a gap between him and next best.”

Ray Ferraro, TSN: “Curious what Weber’s mindset has been -- obviously signing offer meant he was 1 foot out door / deep down had to be preparing for Preds to match.”

Jason Brough, ProHockeyTalk: “‘So...let’s talk about revenue-sharing.’ - Predators”

John Glennon, The Tennessean: “When it comes down to it, Preds had to match Weber offer sheet. They’d said they would, and it would have sent bad, bad msg if they bailed.”

Al Muir, Sports Illustrated: “Maybe this was a ploy by Weber to stay with Preds AND max out his take pre-new CBA...but if he fires his agent soon, we’ll know otherwise.”

Sean McIndoe, Down Goes Brown: “‘We’re matching the Flyers’ offer. Also, you guys had a typo in here, there’s an extra zero at the end of... oh. Oh no.’ - David Poile”

Bob McKenzie, TSN: “Losing Weber on an offer sheet might well have been the death knell of the franchise. As it is, losing Suter to UFA, they have work to do.”

Jimmy Murphy, ESPN Boston: “Realize Weber can’t get dealt for year but he will not finish that contract in Nashville.”

Darren Dreger, TSN: “Few media people surprised Nashville opts to match Weber offer sheet...me incl, but, many NHL team execs didn’t think the Preds could.”
