With the Rick Nash trade done and Shea Weber’s offer sheet deadline approaching, Roberto Luongo’s situation is likely to dominate rumors and headlines. Vancouver Canucks GM Mike Gillis covered a wide range of topics with The Globe & Mail and radio station Team 1040 on Monday, yet he didn’t provide a substantial Luongo update.
Gillis insisted that it wouldn’t be a disruption to keep Luongo around into training camp, according to the Vancouver Province’s coverage of that Team 1040 interview. Furthermore, he told David Ebner that there’s “nothing new to report.”
“As you get closer to the season, things begin to pick up as teams see their needs,” Gillis said. “We’ve been given solid offers. Nothing we would do today. We’re going to continue the process with the teams that are interested.”
The Columbus Blue Jackets decided not to wait until training camp kicked off to jettison Nash, even with a deal many believe fell short of Scott Howson’s stated goals. Gillis insists that the Canucks are willing to wait until “close to the season” - and maybe later - but time will tell if he’s just playing coy.
