When Jonas Gustavsson’s rights were dealt to Winnipeg at the draft, some saw it as a move to help the Jets improve their backup goaltending situation. However, Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun learns from Gustavsson’s agent, Joe Resnick, that his client may not actually be in the Jets’ plans.
“I’m assuming we’ll talk early this week and see what their plans are,” Resnick said in a telephone interview on Sunday. “At the draft, we didn’t really have an opportunity to talk. There was too much activity going on. To be honest, I don’t know what their intentions are.”
Gustavsson is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, and with some teams in need of goaltending help and the choices being slim, it’s a chance for him to score a few extra bucks. Resnick says, however, that Gustavsson is “open to everything.” After being not-so impressive in Toronto, that’s a wise decision.
On the upside, with Ondrej Pavelec being sought out by the KHL and Chris Mason not guaranteed to stick in Winnipeg, the opportunity for Gustavsson to land a contract is there to be had.
