There’s a strong sense that Chris Pronger already played his last game in the NHL, but the Philadelphia Flyers aren’t giving up on his return just yet. Sam Carchidi reports that Flyers GM Paul Holmgren shot down the latest round of rumors that Pronger would officially retire.
Holmgren said on Thursday night that Pronger, who missed most of the season with post-concussion syndrome, is hoping to get better and return to action next season. He is still experiencing headaches, the GM said.
“There’s no truth to him retiring,” Holmgren said.
Speculation was building because Pronger has reportedly been spending time in St. Louis, but it appears that was a family matter. Holmgren said that Pronger is still dealing with headaches related to post-concussion syndrome, so obviously his return remains in doubt.
Pronger’s near-$5 million cap hit would stick around even if he retires because of it is a 35+ deal, although the next CBA could possibly provide a way out.
Either way, the situation still doesn’t look very promising, although it’s not outright “over” just yet.
