Nicklas Lidstrom has called a press conference for tomorrow morning in Detroit where one of the greatest defensemen in NHL history will reportedly announce his retirement.

Lidstrom, 42, wanted to “take a few weeks” to ponder his future after the Red Wings were eliminated on April 20, and now that those few weeks are up he’s ready to announce his decision.

Just prior to his team’s elimination, Detroit coach Mike Babcock said he’d be “shocked” if Lidstrom retired.

“But I’ve been shocked before,” Babcock admitted.

Update: Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press tweeted that a source confirmed Lidstrom is retiring.
