Report: Ottawa assistant Richardson to coach AHL affiliate

Luke Richardson 3

According to Sportsnet, Ottawa Senators assistant coach Luke Richardson is set to become the head coach of their AHL affiliate in Binghamton.

Richardson, 43, has been an assistant with the Sens since retiring in 2009. The longtime defenseman spent 20 seasons in the NHL with Toronto, Edmonton, Philadelphia, Columbus (where he served as captain), Tampa Bay and Ottawa before moving to the coaching ranks.

He’ll replace ex-Binghamton coach Kurt Kleinendorst, who turned down a contract extension in early May.

How Richardson’s departure affects the parent club remains to be seen. He was one of coach Paul MacLean’s top assistants last season, working alongside first-year assistants Dave Cameron and Mark Reeds.
