What a difference a few days makes at the World Hockey Championships.
Finland -- just a few days removed from a 5-0 drubbing at the hands of the Americans -- stunned the U.S. 3-2 in quarterfinal action from Helsinki.
The Finns trailed 2-1 with seven minutes left before Minnesota forward Mikko Koivu tied it up. That paved the way for Jesse Joensuu -- a former New York Islander -- to score the game winner with just nine seconds left, much to the delight of a partisan home crowd.
The U.S. goalscorers were Anaheim’s Kyle Palmieri and Bobby Ryan.
Highlights:
Finland will now meet Russia in one of Saturday’s semifinals. Slovakia will face the Czech Republic in the other.
