Phoenix Coyotes forward Martin Hanzal will miss Thursday’s Game 3 vs. Los Angeles after being suspended for boarding Kings captain Dustin Brown.
The incident occurred at 11:01 of the third period in Game 2. Hanzal was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct for boarding -- Phoenix’s second game misconduct of the night -- and later expressed regret about the hit on Brown this after taking a nasty slashing penalty on Trevor Lewis in Game 1.
“That was really stupid from me,” Hanzal said of his Game 1 antics. “I kind of slashed him from behind. That was unacceptable.”
Here’s NHL discipline czar Brendan Shanahan with the video explanation:
With the suspension, Hanzal becomes the third Coyote to receive supplemental discipline this postseason, joining teammates Rostislav Klesla (one game, boarding) and Raffi Torres (25 games, villainy).
Only the Pittsburgh Penguins had as many players suspended -- James Neal, Arron Asham and Craig Adams -- but the sum total of their suspensions was six games, as opposed to 27 for Phoenix.
