We’ve seen the Stanley Cup carved in ice, we’ve seen it made into a giant fountain in Times Square, but a 12-14 foot tall Stanley Cup made of sand? That’s new and that’s something the Los Angeles Kings are going to pull off.

The Kings announced they’ll be building a massive sand castle-like version of the Cup display near Staples Center for the Western Conference finals. What are they calling it? The “Sandley” Cup of course. The headline writers at NHL.com are more than proud of that ode to their pun-writing skills. The Kings say it will take 30 tons of sand and the display will be one to behold.

Built by a seven-time U.S. Open champion, the final product will feature a 12-14 foot Stanley Cup; a life size depiction of goalie Jonathan Quick in net; and three or four Kings jerseys showcasing player names and numbers all built within one 20x20 space.

Large and in charge, just how L.A. would like it.
