Based on Joel Ward’s regular season statistics, his $3 million annual cap hit seems awfully generous, but then the Capitals weren’t just thinking about just the regular season when they signed him.

Ward has built up a reputation of excelling in the postseason and this year’s been no exception. He already has three points in seven games, despite being limited to just 9:28 minutes per contest. Teams need depth players that are capable of stepping up in the playoffs to give them that extra edge and Ward is certainly that type of player.

Beyond the more obvious numbers, Ward is also a tough forward to play against and one that’s willing to throw his body around. He’s an asset even when he doesn’t make headlines, but it wouldn’t be surprising if he’s involved in another big goal before the Capitals’ playoff run is over.
