Report: Backstrom has hearing with Shanahan over cross-check

Backstrom Crosscheck

According to TSN’s Bob McKenzie, the Washington Capitals have been told center Nicklas Backstrom will have a disciplinary hearing for cross-checking Boston’s Rich Peverley in the face during Monday’s 4-3 loss.

The incident occurred late in the game after Peverley and Backstrom tangled behind Washington’s goal:

Backstrom received a match penalty for the cross-check which, according to various sources, has not been rescinded by the league. That means the Capitals are now facing a situation similar to the one Pittsburgh faced with Craig Adams who, yesterday, received a one-game suspension for instigating a fight in the final five minutes (match penalty) against Philadelphia on Sunday.

More on the Backstrom incident

Caps head coach Dale Hunter doesn’t think it is suspension-worthy.

Peverley ells his side of the story.
