Report: No suspension for Chimera after boarding McQuaid

According to Brian McNally of the Washington Examiner, there will be no supplemental discipline for Capitals forward Jason Chimera after boarding Boston’s Adam McQuaid in Thursday’s 3-2 shootout win.

More, from The Examiner:

The mitigating factors here: McQuaid turned at the last second and put himself in a vulnerable position. Even his own coach, Claude Julien, said that to reporters in Boston after the game.

According to the league, Chimera tried to minimize contact. His skates cross the goal line sideways, an indication he’d already begun slowing down. Also, go down the list of suspensions for charging issued by the NHL’s department of player safety and you’ll see one common denominator – the player left his feet and launched himself at his opponent.

As ugly as the hit looked at full speed, that didn’t happen in this case.

Chimera was given a five-minute boarding major and game misconduct for the hit, one that head coach Dale Hunter defended.

“The guy turned at the last second,” Hunter told CSN Washington. “It’s tough on the refs, I know that, (but) it’s tough for Chimmer to stop. No sense in arguing. The call’s made and you move on.”

The hit occurred at the six minute mark of the opening period -- McQuaid was cut above his eyebrow and told Boston’s medical staff he “wasn’t feeling right.”

He left the contest, didn’t return and the Bruins have yet to update his status.

UPDATE: Julien says McQuaid won’t make this weekend’s New York trip as his eye is swollen shut from the cut.
