Preds send Ellis to AHL

Ryan Ellis

The Nashville Predators have reassigned defenseman Ryan Ellis to the AHL (Milwaukee). It’s tough to say if the 21-year-old offensive blueliner was squeezed out of the lineup by the addition of Hal Gill, as they’re very different players (complete opposites even).

Ellis has three goals and six assists in 22 games with the Preds and could easily be back in the NHL before the playoffs start.

On The Forecheck thinks this move could be a way for Nashville to keep Ellis under the 40-games-played threshold, which would mean 2011-12 wouldn’t count as an “accrued season.” As per the CBA, a player can only become an unrestricted free agent after he’s played seven years in the NHL or after he turns 27 years old. Granted, given Ellis is 21, I’m not positive if this applies to him. His birthday is on Jan.2. Math is hard.
