Leafs’ Gunnarsson leaves practice after colliding with teammate

Carl Gunnarsson

The Toronto Maple Leafs have their fingers crossed that Carl Gunnarsson isn’t badly hurt. The defenseman reportedly left practice today after slamming hard into the boards after a collision with teammate Jay Rosehill; he’ll have his right knee evaluated in Calgary, where the club starts a three-game western Canadian road trip tomorrow against the Flames.

Gunnarsson is behind only Dion Phaneuf in average ice time for the Leafs, logging 22:13 per night and spending time on both the power play and penalty kill.

Toronto has ample depth on defense, leading to speculation general manager Brian Burke could trade one of his blue-liners prior to the deadline. A significant injury to Gunnarsson might alter Burke’s strategy, but let’s cross that bridge if we get to it.
