Many people likely believed that the salary cap era would spell the end to the Detroit Red Wings’ reign of dominance in the NHL.

That largely hasn’t been true, but for whatever reason, the Wings haven’t been able to solve one of the league’s hapless franchises since the lockout ended as the New York Islanders are 5-0-1 against them in that span. It wasn’t exactly as if the Isles squeaked by the Red Wings, either, as they defeated Datsyuk-less Detroit 5-1 tonight.

Then again, the Islanders apparently play better against unfamiliar foes, as they’re now 15-1-7 in their last 23 games against the Western Conference. It doesn’t change much about the Isles’ situation in the East, but the young team can use any reason for optimism.
