Coyotes get Brule off re-entry waivers

Gilbert Brule

Gilbert Brule has been plucked off re-entry waivers by the Phoenix Coyotes. The former sixth overall pick was originally headed to Edmonton after putting up 18 points in 27 games with Oklahoma City of the AHL.

Brule was a star in the WHL with the Vancouver Giants before being drafted by Columbus in 2005. Now 25 years old, his NHL career has been a disappointing one.

His best season came with the Oilers in 2009-10, when he put up 37 points in 65 games.

Brule’s cap hit is $1.85 million. He’s set to become a restricted free agent this summer.

Verdict: a shrewd low-risk pickup for the Coyotes. Brule could be a fit in Dave Tippett’s system that demands a strong work ethic. Bono gives it a thumbs up.
